We might think of future know-how as being flying cars or robot butlers, but in fact the device you’re using to learn this was considered future technology just a few years ago. New nuclear designs which have gained momentum in the past yr are promising to make this power source safer and cheaper. Amongst them are era IV fission reactors, an evolution of conventional designs; small modular reactors; and fusion reactors, a know-how that has appeared eternally just out of reach. Developers of generation IV fission designs, akin to Canada’s Terrestrial Energy and Washington-based TerraPower, have entered into R&D partnerships with utilities, aiming for grid provide (somewhat optimistically, perhaps) by the 2020s.
